2006 Election Victories!
Washington voters elected 90% of the equality-minded
candidates directly supported by Equal Rights Washington Political
Action Committee (ERW PAC), a huge success for ERW and the LGBT
community.
The prospects for securing legislation
to protect LGBT individuals and families increased significantly
as the Democratic majority in both chambers of the Washington
legislature grew. In both the primary and general election ERW
was proud to support Democratic and Republican candidates who
supported LGBT equality.
Especially exciting were pick-ups in
the State Senate where conservative Democrats had previously
prevented passage of equality legislation. ERW welcomes to the
State Senate Rodney Tom, Steve Hobbs, Chris Marr, Claudia Kauffman,
Eric Oemig, Derek Kilmer, and of course, Ed Murray.
While many legislators such as Luke Esser,
Brad Benson, Dave Schmidt, Toby Nixon and Bev Woods who voted
against the anti-discrimination bill lost their elections, only
one incumbent, Jan Shabro (R), who supported the anti-discrimination
bill, lost her seat. Jan lost to Chris Hurst (D) who was also
a supporter of the anti-discrimination bill, and previously held
the House seat in that district.
ERW PAC raised over $120,000 to support fair
minded candidates in 2006.
