October, 2005

We were both 20-something Peace Corps volunteers in Morocco when we met, and we've been together for nearly 20 years. We share our lives now with our 19-month-old daughter in Seattle.

In March 2004, we married in Portland, Oregon. There, we learned that, for us, marriage was far more than a formality. For the first time, we felt fully recognized as loving adults whose commitment to each other was both celebrated and made legal by civil society. Our Oregon marriage license has since been revoked, so we're once again actively ignored by the legal system.

For us, marriage is about full equality under the law, about being recognized as loving, capable adults, and about having access to the legal benefits that marriage provides. It's also about full protection for our family. We want our daughter to grow up in a society where her parents are treated with respect, dignity, and equality. And where she will benefit from the legal protections that marriage provides to a family.
