Here’s what to look for on the ballot:
King County Charter Amendment NO. 2
Prohibiting Discrimination
Shall Section 840 of the King County Charter be amended to add disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity or expression to the prohibited grounds for discrimination in county employment and county contracting, and to the limit the prohibition against discrimination in county contracting to contracts with nongovernmental entities, as provided in Ordinance No. 6204?
The measure will simply add disability, sexual orientation and gender identity and expression to the anti-discrimination section of the King County Charter. This charter change will reflect our county's values of anti-discrimination. The Charter change does not place new obligations on employers or contractors, but simply elevates the prohibition on discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression and disability to charter status joining other classes such as race and religion.
The Charter Change makes clear to employers and contractors doing business with the state that discrimination is not permissible. Presently employers and contractors must dig deep into definitional sections of King County ordinance to find out that discrimination is prohibited on the basis of gender identity and expression.
