Communications Fellowship

Stipend: $3000

Start Date: Starts when filled; ends 6 months from start date.

Description:

The Communications Fellowship program was created by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) both to provide participants with an opportunity to build experience in grassroots media activism and to support state and local organizations as they develop new leadership in the movement for LGBT equality. Fellows at ERW will have the opportunity to work with a key statewide organization in building awareness and visibility for LGBT issues on the ground. The Communications Fellowship program requires a commitment of 6 months and a minimum of 20 hours per week.

Organization Description

Equal Rights Washington (ERW) is the only state-wide political advocacy organization in Washington State working exclusively for equality for all gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. ERW works in coalition with national and local LGBT and allied organizations to promote the health, safety and welfare all LGBT Washingtonians. We do this through public education and engagement, political advocacy and lobbying of elected officials at the local and state legislative level, and by electing equality minded legislators.

Equal Rights Washington is made up of the 501 c (3) ERW Education Fund, 501 c (4) and a Political Action Committee (PAC).  ERW has an annual budget of $500,000 and is located in Seattle, Washington. A Board of Directors governs each entity which share five staff: Executive Director, Advocacy Director, Development Coordinator, Administrative Assistant, and Field Organizer.

In 2007, ERW will be focusing on educating the public and legislators about marriage equality while continuing to build the movement for LGBT equality.

The Communications Fellow for ERW will work in our Seattle office and will play a key role in supporting our communications efforts, including:

 

  • monitoring local and regional media
  • coordinating response to media inquiries
  • drafting  press releases and advisories
  • coordinating media related activities,
  • coordinate drafting  of e-updates and e-mails to constituents and other organizations
  • help plan and implement earned media campaign
    • opinion pieces
    • letters to the editor
    • feature pieces
    • pitching of stories
  • Participate in development of ERW media trainings and resources with GLAAD
  • Maintain media database    

 

Qualifications:

                                      

Applicants should be enrolled in a degree program at least half-time as a graduate or undergraduate student or have successfully completed a graduate or undergraduate degree. Journalism, Communications or Public Relations majors a plus, but any many apply.

Applicants should have:

*  Strong written and oral communication skills.

*  Strong organizational skills, ability to manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines, and desire to be a self-starter.

*  Knowledge of, and commitment to, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues.

*  Confident, professional phone manner for dealing with reporters and media outlets.

*  Computer proficiency in word processing, database work, email and internet research.

*  Ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ages, ethnicities and sexual identities.

*  Desire to hold leadership in progressive and/or GLBT communities.

* Willingness to learn GetActive

Fellowship Stipend:

The Communications Fellowship with ERW extends from September to March and will receive a stipend of $3000. Communications Fellows will work out of the ERW’s Seattle office location for 20-30 hours per week.
